The Local’s Guide to the Best Beaches on the Sunshine Coast

22 August 2019

Moffat Beach

We couldn’t have a local beach guide without including our local Moffat Beach. Fringed with Norfolk Island Pines, this charming curve of coastline is arguably one of the best surfing spots on the Sunshine Coast. If you prefer to take in the scenery than jump on a board, the open parkland and playground areas make for the perfect spot for a family picnic. So whether you’re walking the coast from George Watson Park to Sir Leslie Park, enjoying the views or dipping your toes into the turquoise waters, you’ll soon be mixing it with the locals.

Kings Beach

Once a retiree’s paradise, Caloundra is in the midst of an almighty sea change with Kings Beach in the spotlight. Actually a suburb of the wider township, this neat strip of sand is a family-focused destination, with a playground, bandstands and a saltwater swimming pool. Once you’ve spent the day in the sun, take a stroll along the boardwalk that winds west around the headland for a breathtaking sunset experience.

Tea Tree Bay

Off the beaten track, Tea Tree Bay isn’t easy to get to. You’ll need to hike into Noosa National Park and negotiate your way around koala-spotting tourists. I can promise you it is well worth the hike! This gently curving beach is a favourite of surfers and those who don’t mind swimming without flags. There are plenty of private, shady spots to drop a beach towel and the nearby bathrooms mean you can turn it into an all-day affair if you pack a picnic.

Coolum Beach

Whether your kids prefer its surfing or skating, they will be in adventure heaven at Coolum Beach. Located halfway between Maroochydore and Noosa, this massive strip of coastline never feels too crowded, with miles of sand, hidden bays and rock pools (check out First and Second bays) making it easy to find a quiet peace of paradise. Mirroring the beach you’ll find an oceanfront skate park and playground, and then the patrolled beach near the Surf Club. We love its laid-back Sunny Coast feel, with locals preferring barefoot and boardies as standard daily attire.

Twin Waters Northshore

Starting from access point 132 and extending all the way down to the Maroochy River mouth, your four-legged friends will have plenty of space to run free. This uninhabited beach offers sand hills and rolling waves on one side; the other, a calm inlet to wade about in. Even though it’s a popular jaunt for most dog owners or dog fans alike, it never feels too crowded since there’s seemingly endless miles of sand to stretch – and fetch – about.   Explored all the beaches on the Sunshine Coast, check out Visit Sunshine Coast for more things to see and do!
